Pacific Crest Equine Internship
Since 2006 Pacific Crest Equine has offered an internship program in general equine practice. We feel that our program offers new veterinarians a solid skill level and knowledge base as well as confidence in all aspects of practice. After a variable “mentoring” period, interns take ambulatory calls independently, assist in surgery and anesthesia, and become the primary veterinarian on medical, sports medicine and outpatient cases. Although a senior clinician is available at all times for consultation, we encourage interns to test their veterinary knowledge and to develop their client communication skills by handling their own cases. At Pacific Crest Equine we try to offer an internship that is balanced by healthy personal growth. Although interns participate with emergency duty after the mentoring period, it is in a rotational basis with senior clinicians. We offer a limited weekend schedule and allow for generous time for travel and extracurricular activities. A large, furnished apartment above the hospital is provided. Internships are salaried positions with benefits as well as paid CE and vacation. To apply, please use the form below. A Field Care Internship is offered at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute from January 2019 to June 2020. The internship is very intense and extremely diverse due to the large volume of horses treated by a practice of over 40 veterinarians and the enormous referral base that Hagyard enjoys. The Internship represents an exceptional learning opportunity for those who wish to sharpen their diagnostic, therapeutic, reproductive management, and decision-making skills that are crucial to well-rounded equine veterinarians. The spring rotations will consist of primarily field work and will involve emergency duties both with and without a senior practitioner.

The objectives of the internship are to allow the participant the opportunity to gain knowledge regarding various reproductive management procedures, general medicine in the field, emergency case management, endoscopic procedures, radiology, international horse sales, and lameness training with strong mentorship.

Typical cases that the Field Care Intern will learn to manage include; herd health, basic and advanced reproductive techniques of the mare and stallion, thoroughbred breeding shed services, dystocia management, post-foaling complications, surgical and non-surgical colic workups, ambulatory medicine cases, laceration repair, critical and emergency care in the field, neonatal foal care and on-farm care of the critical foal, field surgery, sales endoscopy and radiology, regulatory and international requirements for shipping, thoroughbred racetrack performance and lameness medicine and others as available.

Qualified candidates must be a graduate from a college of veterinary medicine and have the authorization to practice veterinary medicine in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Applicants are invited to submit a letter of professional interest. The letter should include a statement of career goals and a curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation. The goal of our externship is to provide as much “hands on” experience as possible for the veterinary student. We encourage applicants to spend at least two weeks with us if possible, but four weeks is preferable. The longer that the veterinary student is with us, the more they will be able to do. Externs will gain a significant amount of experience by spending time in the hospital seeing outpatients, as well as going out on the road with our ambulatory veterinarians on routine and emergency cases. They also have the opportunity to participate in after hours emergencies, help BEMC interns with management of inpatients, and can participate in weekly journal clubs and intern rounds, which will further augment the learning opportunities available to them.
