Brandon Equine Medical Center

The goal of our externship is to provide as much “hands on” experience as possible for the veterinary student. We encourage applicants to spend at least two weeks with us if possible, but four weeks is preferable. The longer that the veterinary student is with us, the more they will be able to do. Externs will gain a significant amount of experience by spending time in the hospital seeing outpatients, as well as going out on the road with our ambulatory veterinarians on routine and emergency cases. They also have the opportunity to participate in after hours emergencies, help BEMC interns with management of inpatients, and can participate in weekly journal clubs and intern rounds, which will further augment the learning opportunities available to them.

Sturgis Veterinary Hospital and Equine Center
The externship at Sturgis Veterinary Hospital and Equine Center is designed for the individual who is seeking meaningful interaction with the staff and veterinarians in various aspects of equine practice. Ideally externships last two weeks, we however accept externs for a lesser or greater time as well. Interaction with clinicians is expected, plus opportunities for extra time in specialized areas (surgery, anesthesia, internal medicine, dentistry, reproduction and ultrasonography) with our boarded surgeon and internal medicine specialist. The case load at Sturgis Veterinary Hospital and Equine Center is somewhat seasonal with winter being slower than spring, summer and fall. Virtually all aspects of equine practice are available. Our case load is strongest in lameness evaluation, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, dentistry and reproduction and foal care during spring. We enjoy visiting with students and encourage them to see some of the area’s attractions, such as the beautiful Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and if you are interested in motorcycles, Sturgis is famous for the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Classic in August drawing thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts. Student housing is available on site but unfortunately pets cannot be accommodated.
